Mr Newbury's House

The second session of the RiftWest Campaign

After finishing their examination of the late Josiah Stillwater, the characters proceeded to question Doc Brown about both Josiah and Mr Newbury (the apparent kidnap target). He tells them that Josiah had been in town for only a few weeks and could usually be found in the saloon playing cards, and that Nicholas Newbury is a local academic and expert on history and on minerals, particularly ghostcoal.

Mr Newbury then wakes up and the PCs question him about what he remembers of the night before. It seems that Newbury met a fellow called Quentin next to the alleyway where the attack took place at 10pm. He was just starting his conversation with Quentin when there was a sharp blow to the back of his head and the lights went out.
Quentin had first introduced himself a few days before, as a prospector seeking Newbury’s advice. The meeting with Quentin had been scheduled by a note which Nicholas had received earlier in the day, requesting him to meet near the town clocktower to be taken to investigate the prospector’s claim. Apparently Quentin had acted somewhat suspiciously but Newbury had found that such behavior was common from prospectors and as such thought little of it.

The wardens that headed over to Newbury’s house (having obtained the keys) to have a search around.
When they got there, they found a prospector outside (the mysterious Quentin?) and informed him that Newbury would be with the doctor for the rest of the day, and the prospector (who didn’t seem suspicious at all, honestly) went on his way.
Following this James Woodhouse discovered that the back window to the building had been forced, and decided to make his way in quietly from the rear of the building whilst Hunter entered via the front door.
Upon reaching the small museum section next to the study, they discovered that the room seemed to have received the attentions of a hasty thief. James also noticed that a large section of a map had been stolen (ripped from the wall where it was on display).

It was at this point that sharp-eyed Twilight spotted movement through the window on the upper story on the building, and psychically warned Hunter and James. This prevented the two PCs from being caught off guard what the burglar started shooting down the stairs at them.
A fight ensured, with Hunter intimidating the hell out of the assailant, James pinning him in place with some impressive covering fire to prevent an escape, and Twilight restraining him with twinkly magical rainbow energy. Finally, Hunter grappled the villain and disarmed him with his natural might.
The session concludes as the investigators prepare to interrogate their attacker.
